ArithmeticRek utilizes a manipulative known as a "rekenrek," or arithmetic rack. With the rekenrek, one can demonstrate addition and subtraction strategies used during computation. Mathematical ideas such as compensation, equivalency, and making 10s are supported with this tool.
**App Features**
-In the recorder mode, students can record their physical use of the rekenrek, along with any verbal articulation. A media file is generated and can be saved to the camera roll or sent to a third-party app
-In the arithmetic mode, students are presented with a set of 7 addition or subtraction problems. The rekenrek is available, if needed.
-In the Quick Images mode, students are presented with an image of a rekenrek for a limited amount of time. This discourages counting by 1s and encourages subitizing.
-In the matching mode, students must find pairs of rekenreks that represent the same quantity, but in different configurations.
ArithmeticRek is intended for use with children in grades 1 and 2. It meets a variety of Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
